What is Nordic Walking?

Nordic walking is a specific pole walking technique which harnesses the power of the upper body to turn walking into a workout! It can be adapted for anybody and be done anywhere! See below for Nordic Walking Classes in the heart of London

We brought it to the UK in 2004 & have trained thousands of instructors.

Nordic Walking

The History

Nordic walking was originally a summer training regime for cross-country skiers. This fairly intensive whole-body technique first became an exercise program in Finland back in the 1990s and it has gradually been adapted over the years to be more inclusive and suitable for all levels.

Nordic Technique

Why is it different?

Unlike trekking or hiking with two poles, Nordic walking is all about forward propulsion rather than stability on rough ground. It is important to use the correct types of poles which are always planted at an angle with a full upper body movement that harnesses the power of the chest and shoulders as well as the arms. This action involves a straight arm swing, good stride, and a roll through the foot. This, in turn, engages 90% of the major muscles and shares the load between the upper and lower body.

Every step you take becomes a full-body exercise which includes the core and of course your heart and lungs!

It can only be achieved with Nordic walking poles or total body walking poles designed for the action!

The Unique Nordic Technique

Nordic walking stands out due to its distinct emphasis on forward propulsion and the use of specially designed poles. This technique is not merely about walking with poles; it’s about transforming the act of walking into a dynamic and efficient full-body workout. Here’s how:

  • Forward Propulsion: Unlike trekking or hiking, which primarily focus on stability, Nordic walking centers on propelling the body forward. This is achieved through the strategic use of poles that are always planted at an angle. This angled planting engages the upper body, making each step a comprehensive workout.
  • Engagement of Upper Body Muscles: The proper use of Nordic walking poles involves a full upper body movement. This means that the power of the chest, shoulders, and arms is harnessed with each stride. The motion includes a straight arm swing, a firm grip on the poles, and a coordinated push that propels the walker forward. This technique not only works the arms but also integrates the upper back and shoulders into the exercise.
  • Efficient Lower Body Movement: The lower body is equally engaged in Nordic walking. Each step involves a good stride and a roll through the foot, ensuring that the legs and feet contribute to the forward motion. This movement helps to distribute the physical load evenly across the body, reducing strain on any single muscle group.
  • Core Activation: One of the significant benefits of Nordic walking is its ability to engage the core muscles. As the poles are planted and the body is pushed forward, the core muscles stabilize and support the movement, leading to stronger abdominal and lower back muscles.
  • Cardiovascular Benefits: Nordic walking increases heart rate and lung capacity, providing excellent cardiovascular exercise. The rhythmic movement of walking combined with the upper body engagement turns each step into an aerobic activity, promoting heart health and endurance.
  • 90% Muscle Engagement: The combination of upper and lower body movements means that Nordic walking engages up to 90% of the major muscles in the body. This comprehensive engagement results in a more efficient workout, burning more calories and improving overall muscle tone and strength.

Comparing Nordic Walking to Other Forms of Exercise

Nordic walking is often compared to other forms of exercise, such as running, cycling, and traditional hiking. Here’s a breakdown of how it stacks up against these activities:

Running:

  • Impact on Joints: Running, while an excellent cardiovascular exercise, can be hard on the joints, particularly the knees and ankles. Nordic walking, on the other hand, reduces the impact on joints due to the use of poles that help distribute the body’s weight more evenly.
  • Muscle Engagement: Running primarily engages the lower body and core. Nordic walking, with its use of poles, engages both the upper and lower body, making it a more comprehensive workout.
  • Accessibility: Nordic walking can be done by people of all fitness levels and ages, whereas running might be challenging for those with joint issues or lower fitness levels.

Cycling:

  • Equipment and Terrain: Cycling requires a bike and is generally limited to specific terrains such as roads or bike paths. Nordic walking can be done almost anywhere, including parks, trails, and urban environments.
  • Upper Body Workout: While cycling primarily works the lower body, Nordic walking incorporates the upper body, providing a more balanced workout.
  • Convenience: Nordic walking is more accessible and convenient as it doesn’t require a bike or specific gear beyond the poles.

Traditional Hiking:

  • Stability vs. Propulsion: Traditional hiking focuses on stability and endurance on rough terrains. Nordic walking emphasizes forward propulsion, which can be done on a variety of surfaces, including smooth trails and urban paths.
  • Intensity: Nordic walking can be adjusted in intensity, making it as challenging as a hike or a more moderate exercise depending on the walker’s fitness level and technique.
  • Calorie Burn: Due to the engagement of more muscle groups, Nordic walking often results in higher calorie burn compared to traditional hiking.

Cross-Trainer Machines:

  • Indoor vs. Outdoor: Cross-trainer machines provide a good indoor workout, mimicking the motion of walking with poles. However, Nordic walking allows participants to enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercise, including fresh air and varying terrains.
  • Natural Movement: Nordic walking promotes a more natural range of motion compared to the fixed movements of a cross-trainer machine, leading to better muscle engagement and flexibility.

Nordic Walking Poles

The Key Features

Nordic walking poles are essential to the activity, providing the necessary support and propulsion to turn a simple walk into a full-body workout. Here are the key features of traditional Nordic walking poles:

  • Strap Systems:
    • Glove-Style Straps: These straps fit snugly around the hand like a glove, ensuring a secure grip and optimal transfer of force. They help maintain proper form and reduce the risk of dropping the poles.
    • Ergonomic Handles: Modern poles may come with ergonomic handles designed to fit the natural shape of the hand. These handles improve comfort and reduce hand fatigue during long walks.
  • Pole Material:
    • Aluminium Poles: Lightweight and durable, aluminium poles are a popular choice for beginners. They provide a good balance of strength and flexibility, making them suitable for various terrains.
    • Carbon Fibre Poles: These poles are lighter and offer superior shock absorption, making them ideal for long-distance walkers and those looking for a high-performance option. Carbon fibre poles are also more expensive due to their advanced material properties.
  • Adjustability:
    • Fixed-Length Poles: These poles are set to a specific length and are often favored by experienced Nordic walkers who have determined their optimal pole length. Fixed-length poles are generally lighter and sturdier.
    • Telescopic Poles: Adjustable poles can be extended or shortened to suit the user’s height and the terrain. They are convenient for beginners and for people who share poles with others. However, they may be slightly heavier and less rigid than fixed-length poles.
  • Tips and Paws:
    • Rubber Paws: Removable rubber tips, or “paws,” are used on hard surfaces to provide traction and reduce noise. They are shaped to grip effectively when the pole is planted at the correct angle.
    • Metal Tips: For off-road and trail use, poles typically have metal tips that provide better grip on soft ground, dirt, and gravel. These tips can be covered with rubber paws when walking on pavement or other hard surfaces.

Benefits of Different Types of Poles

  • Aluminium Poles:
    • Affordability: Aluminium poles are typically more affordable, making them a great choice for beginners or those on a budget.
    • Durability: They are resistant to bending and breaking, making them a reliable option for various terrains and weather conditions.
  • Carbon Fibre Poles:
    • Lightweight: Carbon fibre poles are significantly lighter than aluminium poles, which reduces arm fatigue during long walks.
    • Shock Absorption: They offer better shock absorption, reducing strain on the wrists, elbows, and shoulders, making them ideal for those with joint issues.
  • Fixed-Length Poles:
    • Sturdiness: These poles are generally more rigid and sturdy, providing a consistent experience for seasoned Nordic walkers.
    • Lightweight: Without the mechanisms needed for adjustability, fixed-length poles are lighter, enhancing the walking experience.
  • Telescopic Poles:
    • Versatility: Telescopic poles are versatile and can be adjusted for different users and varying terrains, making them an excellent choice for families or groups.
    • Portability: They can be collapsed down for easy transport and storage, making them convenient for travel and hiking.
